Becoming a career and education teacher can be very rewarding. With that said, here are some common considerations for CTE instructors and the curriculum they deliver.
CTE development framework
It takes time to develop in a vocational or tech career. Generally 2-5 years for a student to become proficient. Further, as a student transitions from a student to a worker, instructors should use different development phases and instructional techniques and posses different skills. The CTE curriculum being used should be appropriate for where a student is in their pathway.
Standards alignment issues in CTE Curriculum
In the United States, educators are directed to ensure that every course and CTE curriculum aligns with established development standards. However, this approach poses significant challenges for modern tech careers.
First, these standards are sometimes developed by educators without professional industry experience, leading to misalignment with the actual needs of the industries they aim to serve. Additionally, the standards are updated too slowly to keep pace with rapidly evolving technology.
Furthermore, each state maintains its own set of standards, despite the fact that professional career requirements are largely consistent across states. This fragmentation creates unnecessary complexity and fails to reflect the reality of modern, borderless tech careers.
Teacher related considerations
We’ve often emphasized that a curriculum is only as effective as the teacher delivering it. This is particularly true for technical courses, where the instructor’s expertise and approach are critical to student success. Key considerations include:
Professional experience of teacher
Being a teacher and dedicating time to shaping your students’ futures already makes you exceptional. However, in CTE courses, it’s essential for instructors to have professional work experience in the field they are teaching.
While this may not be mandatory for introductory courses, as students advance, their instructors should always possess greater proficiency to effectively guide and challenge them.
Type of teacher for development phase
In line with professional experience, teachers also need different instructional skills as a student progresses through development. So in early in development a teacher is best as a student is early in their proficiency. However, as a student transitions to a worker, they need more of a coach who can provide active feedback and guidance in playing (work) moments.
Built or bought curriculum
CTE administrators often grapple with the decision to build or buy technical curriculum for their programs, while educators frequently face the same dilemma for their courses. Unfortunately, this focus on development or purchase decisions can overshadow what truly matters: ensuring that the curriculum integrates seamlessly with the broader CTE framework and aligns with the current phase of student development.
